A nationwide pre-owned vehicle marketplace: dealers subscribe for listing credits, private sellers pay per car
An online marketplace for buying and selling used vehicles — with two very different kinds of sellers, each with its own economics: dealers who list constantly and want a predictable monthly plan, and private parties who sell one car occasionally and just want to pay for that one.
One marketplace, two kinds of sellers
The customer runs a nationwide online marketplace for used vehicles. The catch is that it has two very different kinds of sellers: dealers, who list cars constantly and want a predictable monthly plan, and private parties, who sell one car occasionally and just want to pay for that one. On top of that, buyers need to sift thousands of vehicles down to the handful near them that match on make, model, price, mileage and a dozen other specs.
WordPress and WooCommerce had no idea how to do any of that
There's no built-in concept of a monthly plan that includes '20 listings,' no way to draw those credits down as a dealer posts cars, and no way to route a private seller to a one-off payment instead — let alone a used-car search that understands VINs, drivetrains and a 50-mile radius. So we built the marketplace those two audiences actually needed:
The marketplace those two audiences actually needed
A custom subscription and entitlement engine, enforced listing quality, location-radius search, and a seller dashboard that wins back lapsed dealers.
Dealers subscribe for listing credits; private sellers pay per car
The moment a seller submits a car, the platform quietly does the right thing for who they are. A dealer on an active plan publishes instantly and one listing credit is drawn from their monthly allowance. A dealer who's used up their credits is guided to renew or upgrade. A private seller — or anyone without credits — is sent to a simple one-off checkout for that single listing. Either kind of seller can also pay to make a listing featured, with separate dealer and private-party pricing. None of this complexity is ever exposed to the seller; they just post a car.
The subscription & entitlement engine that keeps billing and allowances in lockstep
Under the flagship sits a proper subscription system we built from scratch, because WordPress has nothing like it. Plans bundle a metered allowance (a pool of listings), members consume it as they post, and the engine tracks the remaining balance, resets it each billing cycle, honours grace periods after a plan lapses, and handles clean upgrades and downgrades. Crucially, it stays perfectly in sync with billing: when a dealer's subscription activates, renews or switches, their real-world allowance updates automatically — with no admin touching anything.
Rich, trustworthy vehicle listings
A used-car listing is only useful if it's complete, so we made completeness non-negotiable. Sellers fill out a structured, multi-step form capturing the full vehicle profile — make, model, year, mileage, price, engine, transmission, fuel and drive type, body type, condition, colour and VIN — plus a map-based location. Every submission is validated on the server and rejected if it's thin, with a firm minimum of 10 photos (checked for sensible image shapes) so buyers can actually judge a car.
Faceted, location-aware search — and carousels that sell
Buyers narrow thousands of cars without a single page reload. They filter by make, model, price, mileage, year, body type, drivetrain, transmission, fuel type, colour, features and more, sort the results, and — most importantly for cars — search by ZIP code and radius, from 50 miles out to nationwide. The homepage gets eye-catching carousels that showcase featured or dealer inventory, droppable anywhere on the site.
A seller dashboard that manages inventory and wins back lapsed dealers
Sellers get a self-service dashboard to manage their own cars and see exactly how many listing credits they have left. The system also works quietly for the business: a dealer whose plan has lapsed sees a prompt to resubscribe, and a dealer who hits zero credits mid-post is gently routed to renew before they can list again — turning the moment they run out into the moment they upgrade.

Building a marketplace with more than one kind of seller?
Pros on a subscription, casual sellers paying per item — on WordPress and WooCommerce, we've already shipped it. The parts that usually turn into a tangle, we've put into production.
If that's what you're trying to build, you're one conversation from a head start.
